On New Year’s day, my in-laws went to visit some local shrines near their house, and I went along to take photos. I found the tiny rural temples really interesting – it’s a huge change from the crowds in the big-city shrines.

Great photos. I agree these small town temples are much nicer to visit on New Year’s rather than the crowded big city temples.

Where in Nara were you? My wife is from there and some of the photos look like they could be from the shrine in her neighborhood.
These are all taken around Gojo. I’m afraid I forget the name of the shrines, though.
