This blog by foreign journalist Kjeld Duits is just endlessly fascinating to me. Not only are the old postcards surreally beautiful, but the text that goes with them is brimming with interesting information about Japan’s history and culture. He writes about stuff that you won’t find in English anywhere else on the web, with information about life in the Yoshiwara red light district, how famous places like Osaka’s Dotonbori or Tokyo’s Nakamise Shopping Arcade in Asakusa developed, or the lives of palanquin bearers.
A lot of the posts also have photos of the places as they appear today, and there are maps for people that would like to go visit.
This daily updated blog is fantastic, so be sure to check it out at: http://oldphotosjapan.com/
